moulting

I thought in december that our sec a had started moulting, was getting a good couple of handfulls out everytime we groomed. However she has now changed her mind and seems to be hanging onto it all. Her coat has gone fluffier than what it was, rather than long, thick hair, but she seems to have stopped shedding. My friends ponies are all fed and rugged up in the same way and they all seem to be loosing theirs. Why isn't she?

Re: moulting

I have just bought a pony and he is moulting like mad,but i dont think it is that warm yet. some people leave their stable lights on longer as prelonged light makes them moult! because the ponies thing thr days are longer and spring must be on its way! so maybe she is just not ready yet. every pony must have a different body clock.

Re: moulting

Mine are loosing a tiny bit, but they live out all year. Some rugged & some not. I have noticed that my older sec A seems to hang on to his winter coat longer and get it earlier. Every year of age seems to make them more wise as to when to loose it!! smile

Re: moulting

Mine are moulting in various degrees - and the five year old who is to make his debut under saddle is probably losing less than the others just to be awkward! There is no ryhme or reason to it!

Re: moulting

well i went up yesterday to help my friend start getting 2 of the ponies ready for a show on sunday, and her youngsters are loosing it in handfulls! Mine is stubbornly hanging on to it still. Think we are forecast some wet weather in next couple of days, but when that has gone I am turning out all day with no rug on, see if a bit of sunshine makes her realise that spring is well and truely springing and its time to put her winter woolies away!

Re: moulting

I agree that if it is warm enough to turn them out without a rug on it does seem to increase moulting.
